Turku
The leading development themes for InnoCity Turku are renewing industry and life sciences.
Renewing industry
The foundation of the Tech Campus ecosystem’s operation is the strategic research and education cooperation between four higher education institutions: the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University, Turku University of Applied Sciences and Novia University of Applied Sciences. The City of Turku and Turku Science Park Oy support the operations.
The Turku region is the most important production hub of Finnish maritime industry. Turku is also a leading technology industry hub on a wider scale, combining artificial intelligence, robotics and automation in an unprecedented way.
The circular economy and resource-efficient solutions of the Turku region will be developed in regional cooperation. A particular growing focus is development projects related to hydrogen. The region also acts as a driving force in Finland’s emerging mobility ecosystem which focuses on electrification.
In the Clean sector, the region’s strengths include battery recycling, innovative bioproducts and bio-processing (textiles, bio-materials), environmental technology in the maritime industry, circular economy solutions for energy, process automation and information systems.
Life sciences
Turku is Finland’s strongest centre for excellence and a business pioneer in life sciences. The region’s smart specialisation focuses on medicine development, diagnostics and health technology.
The region’s higher education institutions form the multidisciplinary Health Campus, ecosystem, which encompasses the health and social sector, biomedicine and health technology. The Health Campus ecosystem develops research, education and innovation operations and business activities to promote the health and wellbeing of the population.
