Background information

The state has signed long-term agreements with InnoCities on the allocation of public and private RDI funding to strengthen globally competitive ecosystems.

InnoCities covers all Finnish university and university consortium cities.

The implementation mainly takes place with the financing of sustainable urban development of the EU programme period 2021–2027. The projects especially facilitate innovations that promote low carbon emissions, digital technology and well-being.

InnoCities develop close cooperation networks for innovation activity ecosystems, strengthen competence areas and increase the effectiveness of RDI activities. At the same time, research and the networks that utilise it are assembled into larger centres where different actors complement each other’s competence.

Between 2021 and 2027, the Council of Tampere Region coordinates InnoCities activities in cooperation with cities, regional councils and the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment of Finland.

The activities are directed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment and the national steering group and their secretariats. The national steering group includes Business Finland, the Academy of Finland, various ministries, cities, universities and the business community.
