The Vaasa region built a battery value chain without becoming captive to it
Europe set out to build its own battery value chain. The Vaasa region seized the opportunity, spending years laying the groundwork for a new industry.
The Vaasa region began this groundwork when Europe’s battery industry was still taking shape. Key stakeholders recognised that this transition could create a new opportunity for industrial growth in the region and the country as a whole.
Europe sought to strengthen its battery industry by building an end-to-end value chain spanning raw materials, battery components, cell manufacturing and recycling. The aim was to accelerate the green transition, reduce strategic dependencies and strengthen Europe’s industrial competitiveness.
Finland published its National Battery Strategy 2025 in January 2021. It aimed to strengthen the innovation environment of Finland’s battery sector, increase investment and competitiveness, reinforce Finland’s position in emerging value chains, and develop expertise and responsibility in the sector.
In the Vaasa region, the European objective was seen as a tangible opportunity for regional development.
