Rovaniemi – the capital of Arctic sports – awarded European Bronze Label for its Arctic Sport Cluster for 2026–2028

Rovaniemi is a growing and developing city located on the Arctic Circle in Northern Finland.
The city is actively developing its urban environment, infrastructure and innovation ecosystem with a strong focus on sport and wellbeing. Rovaniemi is a home for world-class facilities and versatile testing environments that create new opportunities for innovation, business growth and international collaboration.

The city and the wider Lapland region have received international recognition for their long term work in building collaboration around sport, wellbeing and innovation. The European Cluster Excellence Initiative (ECEI) has awarded the Arctic Sport Cluster with The ECEI BRONZE Label “Striving for Cluster Excellence”, acknowledging the cluster’s development potential and its commitment to strengthening cooperation between companies, research organizations and other regional stakeholders.

Strengthening Cooperation, Networks and Innovation

The Bronze Label recognizes cluster activity that supports cooperation, networking and
shared learning, while also strengthening innovation capacity, especially among SMEs
involved in the cluster. In practice, it shows that the Arctic Sport Cluster has established
committed cooperation structures, regular activities and a clear ambition to create added
value for businesses and partners through joint development.

“Cluster cooperation creates new opportunities for companies, strengthens networks and
supports innovation through shared learning. The Bronze Label is an encouraging sign that
this work is progressing in the right direction,” says Niko Niemisalo, EU Project Specialist
and Senior Project Manager at Santasport Lapland Sports Institute.

For local SMEs, the value of the cluster lies in stronger networks, new opportunities for
collaboration and better access to innovation-driven development. The label strengthens
the Arctic Sport Cluster’s visibility and credibility as part of a wider European cluster
landscape and enables closer cooperation with international partners.

A Growing Arctic Hub for Sport and Wellbeing

In Rovaniemi, cluster development is closely linked to the city’s broader ambition to
strengthen its sport and wellbeing ecosystem. The region combines strong local expertise in
physical activity, elite sport, nature-based activity, wellbeing tourism and rehabilitation with
test environments and cross-sector collaboration in Arctic conditions.

As global megatrends continue to highlight health, wellbeing, resilience and sustainable
lifestyles, Rovaniemi sees Arctic sport and wellbeing as an area with growing international
relevance. The new label supports the cluster’s next phase by reinforcing collaboration,
competence-building and international connections.
